Hines and Chapman To Continue Football Careers

Mount Vernon Football is excited to announce that Mickey Hines ’16 RB and Chris Champman ’16 OL/DL

have committed to Cornell College to continue their football careers.  Both Hines and Chapman have

been instrumental in the turnaround of the Mustang Football program under second year coach Lance

Pedersen.

Mickey Hines became one of the best return men in the state during his junior campaign in 2014.

During that year he returned 4 total kicks for touchdowns (2 punts and 2 kick offs) and had a 29.3 return

average on kickoff returns. He also lead the team that year in rushing attempts with 116, rushing yards

with 645 yards, and rushing touchdowns with 6.  Hines was poised for a huge senior season in 2015, but

was unfortunately sidelined during the third game of the season with a torn ACL. Prior to the injury

Mickey returned a kick 97 yards for a touchdown in the second game of the year against Solon and had a

37.7 yard average.  He also ran for 172 yards in those 2 ¬Ω games prior to the injury.  Despite the injury

Hines continued to be a leader on the Mustang team offering constant encouragement on the sidelines

and providing one of the more memorable moments of the season when he entered the state semifinal

game during the last play that sealed the Mustang victory over #1 Albia.

"Mickey is a very hard working young man, he bought into the system and was a huge reason for our success.  At the beginning of the season as a player on the field and at the end of the season as a leader on our team.  I see Mickey having great success both on and off the field at Cornell," Coach Lance Pedersen

Chris Chapman was an integral part of both the Mustang offensive and defensive lines during 2014 and

2015. On the defensive side of the ball Chapman accounted for 26.5 tackles including 7 for a loss during

the 2015 campaign.  Offensively Chris was a mainstay at tackle for a Mustang offense that was one of

the best in the state during 2015.  The Mount Vernon offense was second in the state in Class 2A in total

offense, thanks in large part to the work of the offensive line.  Chapman’s work here lead to him being

selected for all district honors during the 2015 campaign.

These two were both big parts of the Mustangs special 2015 season that finished with a state

championship game appearance and a runner up finish.  Mount Vernon Football thanks both Mickey

and Chris for their contributions to Mustang Football and look forward to watching them as Rams.

"Chris was one of our most improved players, he played the game with a lot of heart and was very coachable.  He was a great young man to be around.  I look forward to watching play at the college level," Coach Pedersen
