December 8, 2015 — 12:09pm CST

Mount Vernon Head Football Coach Lance Pedersen is excited to announce that Mustang offensive lineman Tristan Wirfs (’17) has officially committed to the University of Iowa to further his education and athletics career.  He announced his decision via Twitter on December 7.

Wirfs was a two way starter (OL/DL) on the 2015 Mount Vernon Football team that advanced to the Class 2A State Championship game and finished the season as state runner ups with a record of 11-3.  He was a 1st Team All State selection by the Iowa Newspaper Association, a 1st Team All District pick, and was selected by his teammates as team offensive lineman of the year, and is a member of the football council.

Tristan also had an offer from Iowa State, and had seen interest from some of the top programs in college football including Michigan State, Arkansas, Notre Dame, Minnesota, Michigan, Kansas State, Nebraska, Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, and Purdue.

Following his decision Tristan commented that, “After seeing what else was out there, I realized Iowa was where I wanted to be, it’s home, it’s where I belong.”

The Mount Vernon coaching staff is thrilled for Tristan and his decision. Head Coach Lance Pedersen commented, “Tristan is an amazing young man and a very good football player.  I am proud of the person he has become and am excited to watch him finish out his junior and senior year here at Mount Vernon.  You cannot go wrong in choosing the University of Iowa.  They have the best offensive line coaches in the nation and will help Tristan reach his full potential as a college player.  With continued hard work the sky's the limit for him. It is a great day to be a Mustang and this commitment makes me even more of a die hard Hawk fan.”

Mustang Defensive Coordinator Matt Haddy added, “I’m extremely excited and happy for Tristan. He had a great 2015 and I can’t wait to see what he accomplishes in 2016 and as an Iowa Hawkeye!”

Tristan will be a huge part of the 2016 Mustang football team that looks to improve on their record setting 2015 campaign.
