Mustangs Run Out of Time in Title Game

The Mount Vernon Mustangs took on the undefeated Spirit Lake Indians on Nov. 23. at 2:06 pm at the UNI Dome in Cedar Falls, IA.

    The game starts out very quickly with Zach Perry’s kickoff to the 17 yard line. Spirit Lake’s, Billy Brown returned the ball 83 yards for a touchdown. Nicholas Dusold’s kick is good for the extra point. The score is now 7-0, Spirit Lake. Just a couple minutes later quarterback, Drew Adams throws a pass to Jack Cochrane for a 21 yard gain on the play. Touchdown Mount Vernon! Carlos Castro’s kick is good. The score is now tied 7-7. Four minutes later Spirit Lake’s Tyler Jenness runs the ball 2 yards for a touchdown. Nicholas Dusold’s kick is good. The Indians are now ahead 14-7. With one minute left in the first Spirit Lake’s, Logan Backhaus runs the ball 6 yards into the endzone for a touchdown. Dusold’s kick is good for the extra point. The score is 21-7, Indians at the end of the first quarter.

    Forty five seconds in the second quarter Logan Backhaus from Spirit Lake throws a pass to Billy Brown for a 15 yard gain on the play. Touchdown Spirit Lake. Dusold’s kick is good. Spirit Lake is ahead, 28-7. One minute later Connor Herrmann completed a pass from Adams for a 10 yard gain on the play. Touchdown Mount Vernon! Castro's kick is good for the extra point. The score is now 28-14, Spirit Lake. With eight minutes left Spirit Lakes, Logan Backhaus sprints the ball 11 into the endzone. Dusold’s kick is no good. The Indians are still ahead 34-14. On the next series of downs Spirit Lake’s, Backhaus runs the ball 33 yards for a touchdown. Spirit Lake attempts a 2 point conversion pass by Billy Brown to Dallas Poock. The play is good, and the score is now 42-14, Spirit Lake at the end of the first half.

    Mount Vernon starts the second half off quickly with Adams hooking up with Herrmann for a 38 yard gain. Touchdown Mustangs! Carlos Castro’s kick is no good. The score is now 42-20, Spirit Lake. One minute later Spirit Lake’s Tyler Jenness runs the ball to the Mustangs 6 yard line. There is a fumble on the play by Sam Moore for a touchdown! Jack Cochranes two point conversion run is good. Mount Vernon is catching up with a score of 42-28, Spirit Lake. With seven minutes and forty three seconds left in the third Spirit Lakes, Logan Backhaus runs the ball 9 yards for a touchdown. Dusold’s kick is blocked by Mount Vernon’s, Tristan Wirfs. The score is now 48-28. On the next series of downs Spirit Lakes, Matthew Moody runs the ball 1 yard for a touchdown. Dusold’s kick is good for the extra point. Spirit Lake is ahead, 55-28. Two minutes later Jack Cochrane runs the ball 1 yard into the endzone for a touchdown. Carlos Castro’s kick is good! The score is now 55-35 at the end of the third quarter.

    The Mustangs start off the fourth quarter when Adams finds Herrmann for a 21 yard gain on the play. Touchdown Mustangs! Castro’s kick is good, and the score is now 55-42, Spirit Lake. Two minutes later Spirit Lakes, Logan Backhaus throws a pass to Brock Tvedte for 37 yards. Touchdown Indians. The two point conversion pass by Backhaus to Tvedte is good, and the score is now 63-42, Mount Vernon. With eight minutes and 26 seconds left in the third Adams finds Cochrane for a 34 yard gain. Touchdown Mustangs! Castro’s kick is no good. The score is now 63-48, Spirit Lake. Five minutes later Spirit Lake’s, Billy Brown runs the ball 9 yards into the endzone for a touchdown. Dusold’s kick is good for the extra point. The score is now 70-48, Spirit Lake. Ten seconds later Adams hooks up with Herrmann for a 51 yard gain on the play. Touchdown Mount Vernon! The two point conversion pass by Adams to Toomy is good. The final score is 70-56, Spirit Lake.

The Mustangs left it all out on the field by the end of this high scoring, record breaking, championship game. Thank you to all the Mustang fans for supporting the football team throughout this amazing season.
