                                                Mustangs over Camanche for Homecoming

The Mount Vernon Mustangs celebrated their homecoming football game on September 18 at their home field. There were various different events that went on this week such as the homecoming parade, and coronation. Mount Vernon took on the Camanche Indians with the Indians being 1-2 so far this season. The junior varsity game scheduled to be at 5 had to be postponed to Monday, September 21 due to weather.

The Mustangs started off the game very strong with nine minutes left in the first quarter, quarterback Drew Adams throws a pass to Tommy Hook running it 3 yards for a touchdown. Jack Cochrane’s two point conversion run is good. Score is now 8-0, Mount Vernon.

In the second quarter sophomore Colden Clark intercepts a pass and returns it for a touchdown. Sam Moore’s kick is no good. Still in the second quarter, Drew Adams hooks up with Connor Hermann for a 12 yard gain on the play running it into the endzone. Two point conversion pass is no good.  Mount Vernon 20 Camanche 0.

Four minutes and 41 seconds left in the 2nd quarter, facing a 4th and long backed up into their own endzone, John Engelbrecht blocks a punt and Tristan Wirfs recovers it for a touchdown. Two point conversion pass to Hermann is good.

â€šÃ„úSpecial Teams play is a vital part of the game of football.  I was very happy with our punt block team and to get a punt blocked and recovered in the end zone was a great play,” Coach Lance Pedersen said.

The Mustangs then go into their two minute offense. After several nice plays the drive ends when Jack Cochrane runs the ball 3 yards for a touchdown. Two point conversion is good. At the half Mount Vernon Leads 36-0.

After a 20 minute halftime, which included introductions of the 1993 and 1994 State Championship teams, the teams took to the rain soaked field.

Both teams were kept from the end zone until the 2:46 mark in the 3rd quarter when Drew Adams connects with Tommy Hook for a 17 yard touchdown pass.  PAT by Sam Moore is good making the score 43-0, which will be the final score.

Coach Lance Pedersen said, “I was very proud of our guys tonight.  They came out with a lot of energy and flew to the football on defense.  I was very happy to see our defense continue to progress.  Our passing game improved, but we need to work on reducing penalties and mistakes that we have control over.”

This week Mount Vernon takes on the Monticello Panthers at Monticello.  The Panthers are 3-1 and 1-0 in District play.  Mount Vernon travels to Monticello with a 3-1 record overall and are 2-0 in District play.

â€šÃ„úThis is a huge game for us it matches up two district leaders.  We hope to come out of the contest 1-0 for the week.  This is the most important game on our schedule at this point in the season.”  Coach Pedersen said.

Coach Pedersen concluded, “I want to thank our great student body for their support.  The team loves celebrating with them on the field after a game.  I also want to thank our community for their support and all the work by the people involved with putting on our state championship reunion.  It was well deserved, for a group of players who set the bar high for Mustang Football.”
